Player of the Week
Teamkong

Germaine Race made the most of his first start as a Gorilla.  He ran the ball eleven times for 173 yards, and two touchdowns.   For this performance, the freshman from Warrensburg, MO is the Teamkong Player of the Week.

Besides running “hard” he also ran fast and powerful. He outran defenders when he need to, and he ran over others when the time was right.  Race is the total package, and this should be the first of many great starts for this young man.

His success this week did not come on its own. The offensive line had a great day.  They improved their run blocking from week two.  It’s interesting to note with all the passing we have done, they have not yet given up a sack.

Joe Taylor and Matt Strange might not carry the ball as often, but they are great team players, and superb blockers.  The Joe Taylor and Germaine Race combination is a very good one.

Even with the increase in passing yards, the wide receivers have not forgotten their “roots” at Pittsburg State. Their down field blocking is just as solid as ever.  Aaron Bell, Mike Ward, Tim Austin, and even little Jermaine Carpenter take pride in their blocking on the edge and down field.

While Race is the clear-cut winner of this weeks award, Terek Wilson did everything he could to make the choice a tough one.  But the pompous MIAA officials made sure that did not happen.  Wilson broke the MIAA record for career interceptions returned for touchdowns in the first half.  Then in the second half, he broke on a flat patter and took another  to the end zone.  The official negated the play with an interference penalty.  Reviewing the play on tape after the game, it was clean – totally clean.

This team is clicking on all cylinders, and will get better and better every week.  Southwest Baptists will provide another week of improvements for the Gorillas.

Congratulations again to Germaine Race for being chosen Teamkong Player of the Week.
