Player of the Week
Teamkong

After a disappointing loss last week, it was important for Pittsburg State to get off to a great start against Missouri Southern.  It was even more important to maintain that energy for four quarters.

But possibly the most critical aspect of this “bounce back” game was to again utilize all of the weapons in our arsenal.  Last week Jermaine Carpenter only had one offensive touch, and our team again was reminded of the importance of offensive balance.

This balance does not have to be a 50-50 Run/Pass, but there has to be a threat of a passing game. We have seen it all year, with the exception of one game, and witnessed it again last night.

Jermaine Carpenter’s outstanding performance against MSSU has garnered him this Teamkong Player of the Week award for the second time this season.

Against the Lions, the 5’7” junior from Waco, TX caught five passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns.  He also rushed one time for twelve yards. In addition, he had two additional opportunities by returning two punts only four yards.

For the game, Jermaine had eight opportunities with the football, and totaled 163 all-purpose yards.

Whether it be long passes, screens, convoy’s, reverses, or kick returns, Jermaine Carpenter is a legit 4.3 missile who needs the ball in his hands at least eight times a game.  When teams try to take Jermaine out of the game, that is when our creativity will need to come in to play.

The more touches Carpenter gets, the better our running game will be.

His 147 receiving yards this week, was the sixth highest single game total in Gorilla history.  He also has four one hundred receiving yard games this year.  Look for both of those statistics to be eclipsed again this year, as long as his ankle is ok.

Let’s hope it is fine.
